"In about 1878, Drew Douglas donated land to be used to build a church
building to be used by the combined congregations of the Methodist and the
Baptist church groups in the area south of Chicora and southwest of present-day
Buckatunna. The two church groups continued to use this facility for some years
and Drew Douglas was buried in the cemetery behind the church building. It was
a "log cabin" type of building with no finished lumber used at all because none
was available in the locality. This was the origin of the church and cemetery
known as "Providence".
"After the death of Drew Douglas, it was discovered that the deed, as
it had been drawn up, was not legal in form. The deed had been made to the
denomination and not to the trustees of the local church. The 40 acres was then
reverted back to the eight heirs of the Drew Douglas estate.
"W. E. Douglas, Sr., one of the eight to whom the property was
reverted, deeded his five-acre claim to trustees of the local Methodist Church.
By agreement of the other heirs, the five acres immediately surrounding the
church site was agreed upon, thus it became peval property of the church."
